It was built in 1937 as a training ship for a Norwegian school. Just after returning from its maiden voyage, the war began and it was introduced into the navy. It was then requisitioned by the German military and used as a submarine tender. While moored, it was bombed by Allied forces, and after the war, it was discovered half-sunken, and was salvaged by the Allied forces and returned to Norway. After being repaired and returned to the dock, it set sail again in 1947 and participated in sailing festivals and races. It can still be seen today. The white sails, white masts, and white hull are symbols of Norway, a fishing nation.
