The AH-64D Apache Longbow is an improved version of the AH-64A Apache, an all-weather attack helicopter developed and adopted in accordance with the U.S. Army's Advanced Attack Helicopter (AAH) program . The radar-equipped version was called the AH-64D Apache Longbow, while the non-radar-equipped version was called the AH-64C. However, at the end of 1993, the AH-64C designation was discontinued, and all helicopters, regardless of whether they were equipped with radar or not, came to be called the AH-64D Apache Longbow.

The most distinctive feature of its onboard sensors is the Fire Control Radar (FCR), also known as the Longbow Radar, mounted on top of the main rotor mast. This radar detects, identifies, and automatically selects attack targets, and its integrated system management gives it superior control capabilities in combat, making it a new generation attack helicopter.
