The Lockheed F-104 was developed as a supersonic air superiority fighter.
With its small, lightweight airframe and high-thrust engine, the F-104 could reach a maximum speed of Mach 2 and was considered the last manned fighter at the time.
However, due to a change in the US Air Force's policy,
the F-104, being too small to accommodate data links and other advanced features, was deployed in small numbers.
Nevertheless, the West German Air Force recognized the F-104's high performance and adopted the G model, the Japan Air Self-Defense Force adopted the J model,
the Italian Air Force adopted the S model, NATO countries also introduced the F-104, and
the Canadian Air Force adopted it as the CF-104.
There is also a two-seat training version of the F-104.
